Does a security light coming on have anything to do with a car not starting?

I noticed a security light coming in on my dashboard the other day. After about two days my car wouldn’t start. I changed the battery and put on a new one. The car still don’t start at all. No engine sound either. (2003 Oldsmobile Alero) I think it is the starter.
It didn’t make a sound. It didn’t even click. The lights came on the dash. No engine sound at all.

Most likely it’s the starter that went out.

if your car has the chip in the key thats most likely what it is the chip may have gone bad but your best bet is to call a local dealership and ask them dont play into the bring it on in ill check it out cause thats what they will try if they refuse to tell u what it is which they wont just call a different dealer

Read your owner’s manual if it’s a factory installed alarm system. If it was installed by yourself, or a previous owner, call a tow. It seems as though your car thought it was being tampered with…it has shut down your ignition system to keep it from being stolen. You need to find out how to reset the system…some cars have a button under the dash that you press while turning the key to ‘start’, some can be reset with the key fob.Maybe your car used to have an alarm system, and it stopped working properly, and the previous owner got rid of the key fob, but not the rest of the system. Either way, I would bet that there is an alarm system that has shut the car down.

dig around at this link, somewhere there is a forum listed that this webpage was inspired by.this is the passkey system.i think its to old to be your system, but yes the security system can and will do that.anyway im sure that someone at that forum can help.they mix and match different engine combos etc there, very knowledgable people as i understand it.

That car does not used chipped keys, it has some circuitry in the ignition system. Yes it is why your car is not starting.

Sounds like maybe you need to call the GM garage and have them put it on the analyzer. Maybe something is just wrong in the dash. I don’t know too much about cars..I just listen to my 2 sons who are GM mechanics. Good luck.

Could be the Starter or battery, You have to have it towed Mechanic Shop so they can use the Computer to see why your Check Engine Light came on.

  • Gary, the no trash cougar.:

    It probably is your starter.

not used a car for the longest but it sounds like a failsafe to prevent autotheft. if you can’t get the answer from your car manual go to a reputable garage or contact the vendor or manufacturer of this model. good luck.x.

Sounds like your starter, but it could also be the solenoid. However, most solenoids are built into the starter nowadays. I’m not sure if the warning light could tell you that your starter is bad, though.
