Tips

When it comes to choosing outdoor lighting it is important to realize that it is always best to use fewer lights than an abundance of lighting fixtures. When there is too many lights applied, it can create glare and other visual problems that can actually hinder security. Outdoor lighting must be carefully planned to ensure that visibility will be clear and that all light will be even. When there are areas that are extremely well lit or where too many lights have been situated, the remaining areas will appear very dark. This is due to the fact that the eye can only adjust to one area of light at a time.

If one area is well lit, or lit with an excessive amount of lighting, the eye will focus on that area and the remaining areas will appear dark. This type of situation creates scenarios where safety and security is threatened, as people could hide in these dark areas. By creating an environment where the outdoor lighting is level and well spaced, you can make certain that all of the area is well lit, and there are no dark areas hindering visibility.

Glare is another common problem that threatens your outdoor lighting. If you detect that there might be a trespasser on your property, and visually survey the area only to be met with glare from your lighting, you won’t be able to focus on the area and a trespasser might go undetected. One of the best ways to prevent glare is by choosing uniform lights that are spaced at an even distance from each other. It is better to have less light than so many lights you are blinded by them. Keeping your lights lower to the ground level will also prevent glare that might hinder your visibility and ensure that the ground is adequately lit up.

By carefully planning where you will place your lights, how much light you will use, and the aim and direction of your light fixtures, you can make certain that your outdoor lighting will provide you with maximum protection and safety.
